Worth Reading?

Tired of hearing about Android on the desktop? Too bad. Just days after rumors started spreading about a dockable desktop mode in Android 5.0 “Jelly Bean” Patently Apple (which really needs a new name, by the way, since Apple’s “spirit of invention” has devolved into copying then suing absolutely everyone) found patent filings pointing towards trackpad gestures in future versions of Android. You can take this one of two ways: that Google intends the smartphone/tablet to work as a trackpad in docked mode (as it can now) or that these features are aimed at full laptops or desktops running Android.

The latter isn’t totally out of the question either, since more and more traditional PC form factor devices are running on ARM-based hardware, and x86 versions of Android are already in development. At this point either seems likely, since we know virtually nothing about the next version of Android with any certainty. We’ll probably be getting a glimpse soon enough though: the Google IO conference (where major additions to the software platform are shown off) is coming this summer.

Google isn’t the only one dreaming of desktops. Canonical, the publisher of the Ubuntu Linux distro, pulled the covers off of Ubuntu for Android earlier this week. This combination of the ARM version of Ubuntu and Android Gingerbread runs as a standard smartphone at most times, then switches to a full desktop version of Ubuntu when docked via HDMI, retaining access to the phone and its apps. The execution is similar to, but much more expandable than, Motorola’s WebTop. Unfortunately Ubuntu for Android is being aimed at OEM s instead of consumers and probably won’t be coming out until the second half of 2012.

All this leaves one question: where is Chrome? Google’s other OS hasn’t seen much action since the original round of Chromebook hardware, and with Chrome for Android, it seems like the stand-alone operating system is being left behind in the dust. Hopefully we’ll hear more from Google at Mobile World Congress, but we’ll definitely be seeing something at Google IO.

It only started to go wrong after the third year – the 2007 Champions League
final – when his right hand man, Ayesteran, followed other previous close
confidants (who’d also triumphed with Benitez at Valencia) out the door.
Ironically, one of the reasons they fell out is because Benitez thought
Ayesteran wanted to go to Chelsea. If the pair could be reunited now, a
partnership which has echoes of the Brian Clough-Peter Taylor partnership,
would transform Chelsea into potential Premier League winners again.

Bereft of sound counsel, Benitez became more obsessed with politics than
football in his latter years at Anfield. Although he fought Manchester
United for the title in 2009, it was an erratic, unstable period.

A lot of that, it must be said, wasn’t his fault. The ownership of Tom Hicks
and George Gillett took its toll on everyone at Liverpool. A fair proportion
of it undoubtedly was down the Benitez, however, and for his next employers’
sake he must have come to realise the mistakes as he opened the doors of his
Wirral home to the media in an effort to alter perceptions. At the very
least, he must have often wondered how on earth he’d allowed circumstances
to develop where he could lose his job to Roy Hodgson.

If he gets the call, Benitez is clever and pragmatic enough to know he will
need to revert to his former self to succeed at Chelsea. He’ll need to work
with senior players rather than alienate them like Villas-Boas has done.
John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, in the short-term at least,
will need to be allies if an arrangement is to become permanent.

Benitez has more chance of anyone of repairing Fernando Torres. Their
relationship deteroriated at Anfield too in the final season, but there’ll
be mutual benefit in forgetting that to revive each others’ career.

As a short-term fix, Benitez and Chelsea can work. Longer-term, for any
manager to succeed at Stamford Bridge, there will come a point where the
Terrys, Lampards and Drogbas will have to be subservient to the will of the
manager.

Benitez would relish that battle too, and the political dynamic between the
manager, dressing room and owner would be as enthralling – and ultimately
possibly as debilitating – to watch in west London as it was on Merseyside.

Now, at 14, he’s ready to graduate from UCLA. The math major will then enroll in graduate school with the plan to, eventually, earn a doctorate.

“People need to know you don’t really need to be a genius. You just have to work hard and you can accomplish anything,” says Cavalin.

The teen has just published the 100-page instructional book We Can Do, in which he shares his own secrets of success and encourages young people to accomplish great things.

“I was able to reach the stars, but others can reach the Milky Way,” he wrote.

The book took four years to finish. It was first published in his mother’s native Mandarin and translating it personally “was laborious.” We Can Do has already done well in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

The young scholar still doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up.

“That’s a very distant future, and I’m pretty much planning for just the next few years. That’s too far into the future for me to see,” he said.

When he’s not studying, Cavalin loves to scuba dive, play soccer and hone his martial arts skills. One thing he doesn’t do much? Watch TV.

In case you missed it, last night, on NBA TV, the San Antonio Spurs, on an eleven game win streak, faced off against the Portland Trail Blazers in the Rose garden and were completely destroyed, losing by forty points. It was a humiliating beat-down of a storied franchise by a struggling but talented young team. Only it wasn’t. Because Gregg Popovich, the man many believe is a genius and the best coach in the NBA, threw the game…

The Spurs were on the second night of a back-to-back, the third game in four nights (wins against the Clippers and the Utah Jazz), and the eighth consecutive road game. Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter were both injured in the Clipper game on Saturday night. Ginobili was sent home to San Antonio and Splitter is traveling with the team, wearing a large, expensive suit. But, with an twelve-game winning streak on the line, Greg Popovich made a decision. With a twelve-game winning streak on the line, and with another game on Wednesday Thursday against the Denver Nuggets, the legendary coach decided eleven was enough.

The Spurs starting lineup was DeJuan Blair, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Richard Jefferson, and someone named Cory Joseph. You’ll be forgiven if you don’t remember Joseph, a Canadian, and the 29th pick in the 2011 draft, because he logged a whopping ten seconds against the Clips.

I’m trying to decide, was this a brave, bold move by the genius, giving away a game in a tough arena to a struggling team, or was it an awful chicken-hearted decision… to actually and obviously throw a game. After all, the Rose Garden attendees paid big money for their seats, they’re expecting to see Tony Parker and Tim Duncan on the court aren’t they? Those players are admittedly healthy. Tim’s old, sure but Parker’s only 29 and played 78 games last year. And what about that winning streak? Does it mean nothing?

To Popovich, to the Spurs, yes, it means nothing. I think Popovich made a great decision. He knows his team better than anyone, he’s the rare NBA coach, not worried about his job, and his team has to be weary on the Spurs long “rodeo” road trip. They just won seven games straight on the road and they beat the teams they needed to beat (Memphis, Philly, and the Clips) on alien floors. Portland? A tough arena but a struggling team, who might not make the playoffs at all. They simply are not in the Spurs post-season plans. And what do the Trail Blazers get to take away from this? Nothing. They didn’t beat the Spurs, they beat a bunch of guys wearing Spurs jerseys. Pop said to himself: “Let the gods have this one, and lets see what we can do against a badly injured Nuggets team in two days.”

As Clippers fan, Pop’s decision probably has some empirical meaning, after all he took the Clips seriously enough to let Tony Parker play 45 minutes on Saturday and Timay 40. Which, wearing our optimism hats for a moment, can only be construed as a good thing… right?

If you struggle to spend more than a few moments away from your computer then a new invention could be for you.

That’s because a pair of Dutch inventors have developed a set of jeans that give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘laptop’.

The jeans, known as Beauty and the Geek, come with a fully functional keyboard, mouse and speakers integrated into the upper leg of the fabric and are the idea of design company Nieuwe Heren, run by Erik de Nijs and Tim Smit.

In use: The jeans stay connected to the computer via wireless technology and allow the user to move around while typing. A mouse is attached to the jeans using an elastic cord

The duo handmade the trousers themselves and they are designed to give a user ease of movement while still being in control of the computer.

‘They’re not that heavy,’ de Nijs told WebProNews. ‘With the flexible keyboard,
small speakers, and small mouse, they are only a little bit heavier than
your regular jeans.’

He added: ‘The idea was that you could log in to your computer and control it without sitting in a closed environment behind your desk.’

The jeans are of a modern style and have a back pocket that has been specially designed to cover the mouse, which uses an elastic wire to stay attached.

They stay connected to the laptop via wireless technology in a USB device and are expected to retail at around £250 – if they ever make it onto the market.

De Nijs added: ‘The whole project is too complex and we don’t have enough money right now to get it ready for the market.’
